[Kenwood] Problem with TH79A 2 metre handheld

HI to the group,

I have a friend with TH79A which has for the last few weeks been displaying 
random characters and not working correctly.
He has 2 batteries and this mode occurs  with either battery installed.
Has anyone a suggestion as to the problem.
