[Kenwood] D700 distorted on crossband repeat

Hello,

I searched the archives of qth.net and did not find a
post regarding this problem. I am trying to use the radio
in crossband repeat mode, where I transmit to the D700
on 440 MHz and that transmission is rebroadcast on 144 MHz.
The problem is that the audio is distorted and/or muffled
sounding, both as it is received by somebody on the 2-meter
end, and when they transmit back to me and I receive it on
the 70 cm side. I've turned the deviation way down on both
halves of the radio (to a setting of 10h, down from 59h originally),
but the distortion/muffling is still there. Am I doing something
wrong and is there a known fix for this distortion? I am leaving
for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska on March 4th, so I
hope to get some kind of resolution to this problem by then.
Since the timing is tight, please send any suggestions to
my home and work emails - thank you very much!
