Thank you very much - I'm pleased at any rate that its a known problem and
that there is a cure.
I'd be very grateful if you could find out a mod which would enable me use
the linear in CW

Vince it could be several things. First, the chattering sound is coming
probably from the fact that the RF is seeing an open circuit and the
antenna tuner/swr circuitry is reducing the power to near zero. If you are
controlling the linear through the REMOTE connection, the signal to the
linear in that type of operation is too slow. This is typical for 850's in
CW. Someone else on this list had a similar problem and there is an
external keying system that he used to overcome this problem. I'll see if I
can find that, or perhaps someone on the list can help with that.
