[Kenwood] Nobody loves the 820S

Jeff,

My guess is that shops don't want to work on the 820, because if they run 
into a dog problem, the repair cost could exceed the value of the radio.

I repaired a display problem for a friend of mine, and it took a lot of 
time.  Part of the problem was that the display board didn't match the 
parts layout and schematic in the service manual!

If you are technically inclined, aske for help here on the reflector.  You 
may find someone who has seen your specific problem and can point you in 
the right direction.  I know I've gotten a few hints that have sure saved 
me time repairing my Kenwood rigs.

The 820 is a decent radio.  I put the one I repaired on the air for testing 
purposes, and no one knew I wasn't still running my 850.

I have a TS-820S that I've been struggling with for a couple of months
after inheriting it from a SK.

I've contacted two well-known Kenwood shops and while one said send it on,
it was obvious they were not excited to work on an 820S, while the other
said that they simply don't take them in anymore (unless they were
perfect collocters items) because parts are so scarce or not avaialable.

OK, they run their shops as they see fit and that's all good. But I'm
still left with a radio that I like that is squirrely. If the answer is
that an 820S is just not worth the effort, I can handle that and will do
what I can on my own.

But if anybody out there has a suggestion for a shop that will look at an
820S, please let me know.
