[Kenwood] TH-D7A(G) programming from a USB port

Hi all,

Just got a D7A(G). Got the initial programming done. Computer went south. 
New laptop has four USB ports but doesn't have a "serial" port.

The software allows selection of COM1-4. I assume that a COM port can be 
reassigned to one of the USB ports but haven't had the time to do the 
research yet. Has anyone done this?

Has anyone found a USB to "serial" adapter that is readily available? Radio 
Shack has "6 Ft. (1.8m) USB-to-Serial Port Cable" #26-183  for $41.99 on 
its web site.

Has anyone found a better way?
