Hi All,

Bry, I have just repaired my 520S and serviced it for what sounds to be
the same common problem. It is a bad contact on the grounding wiper
on the VFO tuning capacitor. It is necessary to pull out the VFO
completely in accord with the procedure detailed in the maintenance
manual (available on the web for download). Remove the can and
clean the wiping contact. Add some contact cleaner and exercise the
capacitor. Maybe make sure the tension on the grounding contact is
still OK. Then reassemble making sure to preserve the position of the
capacitor relative to the dial.

A messy job but once started is not all that bad with care.

At least you can see the components unlike the modern surface mount
stuff!

I'm not sure what you mean by "tumblers" but the dial scale on the
main tuning knob can be moved by hand independently of the main
knob to correct minor calibration shifts - maybe that's all that's
needed?
