I have a TS-850S.  It is a great radio.  The flexibility with filtering is 
incredible, not to mention the slope tuning.  It will also easily operate a 
transverter.  Read the review in QST magazine.  These are available online since 
you are an ARRL member.  I have talked to several owners of TS-870s and all of 
them said "keep the TS-850S."  One of the criticisms of the 870 by the ARRL 
was the inability to use filters other than the DSP.  The "high fidelity" ops do 
like the 870s though.  As far as the TS-950SDX (only one I would consider), I 
would love to try one.  However, they are too expensive for me.  

I think the 850 is the best radio on the market, new or used, for the money.
