[Kenwood] TS 830 cleaning controls

This is to add a small point to the excellent advice already given.
For application of cleaning / lube chemicals inside a potentiometer, my
preference is not drilling holes, but instead piercing a hole with a
sharp awl. First, inspect the radio in order to be sure that work on
the potentiometer, will not endanger the rest of the radio. Try to make
the hole in just one push. If you can't stab the awl through the shell
by hand pressure, you may get through by giving the awl a rap with a
light weight hammer. Use judgement before hitting or hammering or
forcing. Mechanical shock can damage sensitive components
(semiconductors, tubes, crystals, ceramics to name only a few). Don't
use forces that will flex a circuit board. It may be best to remove the
pot from the radio for further work or replacement.
My main point is this: Piercing will tend to avoid getting metal
shavings inside the pot. I have tried drilling holes carefully, in an
upward direction, hand-twisting a tiny carbide bit held in a pinvise,
but even then was not confident of avoiding metal shavings in the
potentiometer.
