By mechanical abrasion, I meant a "pointer swab" at most!
Any preferences among application methods: spray, needle bottle, or brush?

DeoxIT it is. As far as any mechanical action is concerned, tread lightly!
A plain piece of paper or thin piece of card stock will usually have enough
abrasion to do the cleaning with the DeoxIT. Also, turn the band switch
while spraying the cleaner
OF LAST RESORT would be to use a burnishing tool on the contacts.
