[Kenwood] TS-850 low SSB power out

Hi folks,

I am sure this topic has come up before and I apologize in advance but the 
kenwood archives lack a search engine.  I am a new owner of an 850 and am 
new to Kenwood amateur gear in general so I'm in learning mode.

My 850 on sideband won't peak out at more than around 60 watts before the 
ALC kicks in.  Normally this would not be a big deal except that I drive a 
grounded grid cathode driven pair of 3-500s and as anyone with such an amp 
knows, it needs more ooomph from the exciter than the ceramic tube screen 
driven amps do.  Around 100 or a little more watts would be nice in order to 
hit 1.2 kw when I need to.  I've checked the feedlines and made sure it's 
not folding back due to a swr problem, so it looks like the next thing to 
try is to go in to the trimpot no. 7 on the tx board and try to dial back 
the ALC a bit.  I just wanted to check here to find out how common a problem 
this is, and if I am on the right track.  I have the service manual with the 
ALC adj. portion and it does not seem to be too tricky.
