[Kenwood] TS-820S VFO Tracking

In cleaning a very heavily nicotine coated VFO, which had some gear problems, it was necessary to separate the VFO proper from the gear train.  Would appreciate comments from those who have "been there - done that" as to the least stressful method of reassembly so the VFO variable  capacitor tracks correctly when the VFO dial  indicates 0 to 500. The VFO functions  but am experiencing a challenge in getting the VFO variable capacitor in the right position to agree with dial reading.
