Just guessing, but sounds like (at least one) electrolytic capacitor in the audio stage is defective.

Subject: [Kenwood] Kenwood TS 711 troubles
Hello to all you Kenwood lovers. well my trusted 2mt rig is showing signs of
its age. this TS-711 when first turn on has very distorted rec.audio all most
like growling but Transmit seems to be OK. after a bit of warm up time works
like normal. this 711 is run off external 12 Ps so no heat being generated by
the internal supply. anyone had this happen before or know of a common fix.
Thanks Darryl WA5TOO
