[Kenwood] VFO-240 on TS-530S problem

As far as I can tell, the VFO functionality is working. The Function
switch on the VFO switches control between the internal and external
VFOs and the frequency readout matches the dial on the appropriate
display.
I just lose signal and audio when the VFO cable is plugged in. No
S-meter deflection, no hiss, nothing.

Plugging the REMOTE VFO cable into the TS-530S will cause the vfo
internal to the radio to stop. The external vfo switches the internal
vfo on and off as it toggles between the two vfo's. I have the VFO-230
digital vfo on my TS-530s and plugging in the cable only will disable
the internal vfo until pins 3 and 5 of the cable are shorted to turn
the internal vfo back on. The cable shell actuates a switch that does
