[Kenwood] TS-440S/AT Problem

I have a TS-440S with Ant. Tuner which I purchased new in Nov. '89. It =
was working fine one night a few weeks ago. The next morning I turned it =
on and heard in the receiver, a noise which sounded like a motorboating =
or an ignition noise source (similar to a 1955 Ford pickup, for those =
that can remember that far back) under the antenna. This noise was =
across all bands and was louder where there were signals or band noise. =
Sigs were masked by the noise and unreadable. I also noticed the antenna =
tuner would not stop searching for a match where it had a match the =
night before. Also when transmitting the power was very low and the =
resulting transmitted signal sounded like the noise heard when in the =
receive mode. I fiddled with the rig most of day and noticed that after =
a few hours, it went back to normal. Over the next few days, after =
gradually shorter warm-up times...down to about 10 mins., the radio =
would return to normal operation. Its been a couple of weeks now and so =
far it is working normal with no warm-up required. Has anyone had this =
problem and if so, what was the cause? It didn't realize that Kenwood =
was advanced enough in 1989 to have self-repairing circuits.

Thanks de Bill K4JYS
