         Yes, you can, but you will only hear the signals which open the
squelch.

        Yes, unless you squelch the receiver......

>  RF gain all the way up.

        Turn the RF gain down until the noise just stops...only the signals
above the RF setting will be heard. Similar to using squelch.

    A combination of squelch and RF gain setting will ensure only the
strongest signals will be heard, in which case you might not hear anything.
Unlike FM signals, SSB signals vary in amplitude and may or may not
intermittently break the squelch/RF gain settings.
