[Kenwood] 850 vs 450

Bob,
  I wrote a long banter about the differences between the 870 and 570 in =
the QRZ reviews section:

My reply was the fourth one down.

IMO, the 570 is a step up from the 450, but not quite on par with the =
850.  The one good thing about the 570 is that you can hook up an RS-232 =
cable directly to it and start talking to it without the need for a =
level converter and Kenwood has RCP570 available for free so you can =
start right up and use it.  The only new feature where the 570 has as an =
advantage is the CW auto zero beat and the auto notch filter from the =
audio DSP.  The downside for CW ops is that you are still hamstrung with =
AGC Fast/Slow and no AGC Off.

Someone on the board complained about the 570 overloading.  That's =
because he probably kept the AIP off.  My gripe with Kenwood's rig =
layout is that they default with the preamp on.  Icom defaults with it =
off and recommends not using it on the lower bands.  I agree and more =
often than not, I put in 6 or 12 dB of attenuation most of the time =
during casual use.
