[Kenwood] TS-940 Problem - Help Needed

When my friend Larry, AJ2W,  is listening to SSB or CW signals on all 20
through 10 meter bands (not tried below 20 meters), he hears an
intermittent
loud (S-meter goes to over S9) tone/birdie that sounds like a "gun
shot".
This happens even when I am not tuned into a signal. It is very
intermittent with no regularity. Guess some would call it a Birdie..

Could it be Cold solder joints or a bad internal ground connection?  Any
other ideas?  Any help would be appreciated.
