I used to have a very good friend and work companion (now a silent key) 
who had an unusual situation.  Every time he spent a specific amount of 
money on ham radio, his wife went to the mall and spend the exact same 
amount on "stuff."  Consequently, if he was considering spending, say, 
$1500 on a new rig, he had to consider that his out-of-pocket cost was 
going to be $3000.  I never quite understood that, but it worked for 
them and they seemed to be happy with it.  Different strokes for 
different folks.
