I won't repeat what Alan said in his mail since it's good useful
information. You also asked, "As far as the waveform monitoring goes, is
it possible to have the scope trace the TX waveform like the Icom 781
does, for instance?  (It has the peaking waveform centered in the
display)". The pan adaptor junction is disabled during transmit due to
design limitations in the transceiver and the SM-220. The pan function is
"cute" but not highly accurate as a test instrument. The SM-220 shines as
a very good monitor of your transmitted waveform when using a
transmitter/transceiver and it's even more important when your equipment
is used in conjunction with a linear amplifier.
