         Wow...thanks Randy!  That worked like a charm!  The two
pots (VR1 and VR2 in the encoder adjustment procedure) are
on the tiny pc board (RF Encoder Unit X54-1690-00) directly under
the VFO assembly.  They are tiny but visible through two holes in the
upper left area of the pc board as you view it from the front.  I simply
sprayed a shot of TV Tuner Cleaner into both holes, noted their
positions and using a small jeweler's screwdriver, moved both pots
and returned them to their original positions.  Both seemed to be
stuck since it took more torque than I expected to budge them, but
everything works fine after returning them to their original positions.

         I'm copying this to the Kenwood reflector for their archives.
