Hello all -

I have seen some references before to the "more IF conversions = better 
receiver" thinking and it is not correct.  (This may not be a correct 
interpretation of John's post, but his post reminded me about this 
subject).

More IF conversions have certain advantages, of course, but the very 
best receiver in some respects (great BDR at close spacing, terrific 
dynamic range...) has a very low parts count and is "single 
conversion" - the Elecraft K2.  More IF's means more noise (engineering 
fact of life) though high quality components and extra noise lowering 
circuitry can help maintain a good signal to noise ratio.  More IF 
conversions just doesn't automatically give you anything but more 
components.

That said, my 850 is about 95 per cent as good as most $10k radios (for 
MY purposes) , so I'll not be spending a bunch of money on any new radio 
soon.  Hi.
