Hello Dave,
This problem is covered in a Kenwood Technical Bulletin, ATB-0020 "TS-870S PLL
UNLOCK WHEN THE SO-2 IS INSTALLED"
The symptom is as you've described, resulting in an "ERR" on the display. It is
caused by insufficient bias on Q501 on the PLL board. The fix is to change the
value of R506 from 33K to 18Kohm, and then realign L518, L519, L520, L529 and
L530. The realignment is performed by connecting an RF voltmeter to the "TP
55MHZ" point, and adjust all 5 coils for peak output.
The tech bulletin should be available from Kenwood's site. If you can't find
it, let me know and I can send you a copy.
