Unless you have a true peak reading wattmeter you should not see more
than 25 to 30 watts on SSB. When you drive up to 60 or 70 watts on the
average reading wattmeter, you are driving the P out of the radio and
splattering all over.

Set the ALC for 100 watts on CW, then drive the ALC to the same place on
SSB and you will get ALL the radio can do (100 watts peak, the rest
linear) and it will sound good. Driven harder it will sound bad and
annoy all the other users of the band.
