Well,
I sure learned my lesson. When I got the HT back, I sold it at once, took
the mobile out of my car and I no longer have any VHF equipment.
Just not worth the hassle and suspicion these days....

Honest and respectful, inquiring as to the knowledge level of the
particular person re. Amateur/Ham Radio, then communicating with them in
images with which they are familiar.
It makes no sense to start talking about Amateur Radio if they have no
idea what that means, it does make sense to describe a piece of Ham gear
in terms of other communications gear with which they are familiar.
It may scare a non-technical person to hear tower-to-plane chatter, or
some guy screaming at another on the local repeater, coming out of that
odd looking electronic device -- static (trust me, that is what I get
most of all inside the terminal) or music is less likely to panic the
uninformed.
Pulling the batteries makes sense if the device is not on your person,
carrying an non-functioning electronic device on your person is likely
to raise suspicion -- I carry my F6a in plain view on my hip -- ready yo
be powered on same as my laptop and camera. Never a question asked by
anyone.
