I have traveled with mine with no troubles at all, they treated it the
same as a cell phone, digital camera, or laptop.  Just run it through
the scanning system and be prepared to turn it on so they can see it
work (have it set for a freq that generates music or noise and not 2-way
communication. If it won't pick up a local music station, as will the
F6a, press the squelch for noise and complain about the poor music
reception inside the terminal).

If they ask what it is tell them it is a kind of CB or FRS radio like
they see at Radio Shack or Walmart.  Most have no idea what Amateur
radio is and if you mention the term  "emergency communications" you
have unnecessarily used a "code phrase" that makes them nervous.  Keep
it simple.
