In SE FL UPS is the same way, every package needs to be inspected so for
awhile there I never bothered sealing them since they just cut them open.
UPS claims that it is due to security, this is a sorry excuse and I know it
for a fact from a UPS person.

In actuality they have had problems with people pulling scams, 2 bricks in a
box (or whatever) shipped to a location with a damaged item, phone call is
made and insurance claim is started for replacement with the item which was
never shipped in the first place.

9/11 was just a good excuse for them to start this process and avoid the
fallout!

Don't forget that the online interface for FedEx is much better (and free
once you set up an account), and they don't make you undergo a body cavity
search to ship anything. In Dallas, UPS wants every box unsealed so that
they can look at it. God forbid that you want to ship a radio, computer,
etc., because they'll want to see it turned on. They're almost worse than
airline security these days.

Instead, with FedEx, I go online, fill out one form, print the label and
stick it on the box, go to my local FedEx counter, and hand it to one of the
clerks (sealed and everything). That's it - no fuss.

I think one reason people don't think of FedEx is that they don't realize
FedEx now offers ground service. FedEx ground is almost always cheaper than
UPS, is usually quicker to arrive, and is always more reliable. I find my
packages less destroyed when I use FedEx, and, should you need it, their
handling/processing of insured packages is excellent.

This brings me to my main point.  Why do most hams
ship their gear by UPS, when their service is so
pisspoor?  I now use nothing but Fedex.  They are
usually 30-40% cheaper than UPS for the same packages,
their counter hours are better, and their service is
quicker.  ALso, why does every ham dealer use UPS?
Seems they could save a little on shipping with Fedex.

here is another story.  Last summer I traded a FT847
with a ham in Las Vegas for a FT100D (The FT100 is a
much better radio.)  We both shipped on the same
day-me using Fedex and he was using UPS.  He got the
radio 1 day before I did.  The fedex website showed
that the radio went from Oklahoma city to Phoenix to
Las Vegas.  The UPS website had the radio going to Las
Vegas to a few places, including Kentucky.  I fail to
see how Kentucky is anywhere on a remotely direct
route from Las Vegas to Oklahoma.  Obviously UPS
learned their geography in our public schools.

So why do most hams use UPS?  Is it habit?  Is it that
they don't know about Fedex?  Are my experiences
unique and everyone else gets great service from UPS?
I have a couple of other stories about UPS that I
won't get into at this time.
