There was a strong carrier outside your receiver passband but inside the
noise blanker passband and the noise chopped that carrier with the noise
blanker making it into noise.

Line noise on a BC radio loop stick next to a ground wire down a
transformer pole can come from miles away. Now if the noise peaks there
on an AM receiver at 145 MHz, the noise IS on that pole. But where on BC
frequencies the noise can be heard for miles, it won't be heard for more
than a hundred feet or so on VHF AM.
