[Kenwood] Possessed TM-733A

To Cliff of Avvid and all other interested parties,
I wrote a while back about my 733 still being "on" even after being
turned
off. It was making hissing noises from the speaker and would get hot to
the
touch after about a half hour. I discovered that the reason it was
getting hot
was that the 440mhz side was transmitting at a random freq around 438mhz

at low to mid power. Cliff suggested that a transistor in the turn on
circuit of
the main body might be shorted. Kudos to Cliff as that is exactly what
was
wrong. For those of you interested it was Q233 (2SB-1302), a surface
mount
transistor mounted on the underside of the 440mhz TX-RX unit. This
transistor
apparently controls the B+ being applied to the 8 volt regulator and
other
circuits. Since it had shorted, voltage was being applied to a lot of
the radio
when it was supposed to be off. I replaced it and now have exorcised all
demons
from my 733. In looking at the schematic for my TM-732A I see that the
same
circuit is in that rig so if it happens to the 732 I'll be prepared.
