Could it be that there is an impedance mismatch between the 850 and the
headphones?
Also, the original QST review of the 850 mentioned this problem in the
first unit they tested. They said another 850 they tried did not do this.
I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, and I've never noticed it in
mine, but for what its worth, it has been documented.
By the way, this problem aside,could you compare the overall receive
capability of the two rigs for us?
