[Kenwood] TS 850 Audio Quality

Hi All,

I have a 850 and was wondering if anyone could comment on the following =
observation. I was listening to 40 meters with small headphones last =
night and heard what sounds to be some clipping/popping on audio =
signals. The noise was around a S5 and the signal was around S9. The =
AGC was set to fast and the RF gain was at max. The 850 was in LSB with =
both 2.7 filters engaged. With these settings the audio sounded as if =
the peaks were getting past the AGC response and popping. Switching to =
slow AGC helped some but the only true fix was to lower the RF gain. I =
also tried some attenuation but that didn't seem to change the audio =
quality. Interestingly enough, when I engage the notch and set the knob =
to anywhere in its range, the audio problem goes away. I have an IC-746 =
next to the 850 and on the same signal the 746 doesn't have a bit of =
trouble. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

Jason
