[Kenwood] T599/R599 Transceive Interconnection Cable

I don't own one of these, but I am curious as to whether one could not make
up his own? Are these as simple as Drake interconnecting cables? 78$ for an
interconnecting cable for a radio that is probably worth three times that
seems rather steep?
