[Kenwood] 940 Serial Number Help

I'm working on a 940, s/n 0090021.  Can someone tell me if this is a late 
model or very early model?  The reason I ask, is because I have some mods 
with serial number references, but the references are in the format 601XXXX 
thru 708XXXX.  That would indicate to me that the 940 I'm working on is a 
very old one??
