[Kenwood] Unexperienced han and his TS-520

I have been away from the hobby for about 12 years. Only experience I
have was with a radio shack 10 mtr rig. I have acquired a TS-520 back in
1990 and it sat in its box until recently. I have been tuning around and
listening in on all I can pick up. I don`t have a proper antenna or
tuner till next months Ham Fest, So I never transmitted on it. It also
have always been stored in a dry climate and never banged around. I also
have been following the manual to the "T" so I don`t screw anything up.
My question (or problem) is with my receiving part of the rig. The
receiver works great till I turn on the heater switch. I can listen in
on a very strong station but when I turn on the heater switch that very
strong station is now barely audible?? Not only that, there is this
weird oscillating sound that comes thru the speaker and that noise seems
to travel up and down the band that I`m on?? Does anybody have any clues
in what this might mean? Or is this normal? However, I don`t believe
this is normal. I`m trying to get back into the hobby and don`t want to
learn any lessons the hard way like having my rig blow up or something.
Has I said, I have been following the manual very closely. Any comments
or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thx .
