In my opinion, the TS-2000 is the best deal in amateur radio today. At less
than $1800.00 new right now, you're getting a whole lot of radio for not
much cash. And it's a pretty darn good rig, especially given the price.
Compare the specifications in the QST reviews of the TS-2000 (July 2001) to
the FT-1000MP Mark V Field (August 2002). Except for the second order
intercept numbers with the Yaesu's VRF feature engaged, the TS-2000 holds
it's own very well, beating out the vaunted "contest rig" in some catagories
and keeping within a few dB in all others. The Mark V Field does have a
second receiver, which is desirable, but for the cost of filtering the rig
up (5 filters at $150 bucks a pop, plus those for the sub-receiver) and
buying the TXCO ($100.00), which is included with TS-2000, you could buy a
used TS-570 to use as a sub-receiver with the TS2000 and have plenty of cash
left over for beer and pizza after the contest for the whole club. I'll
trade the TS-2000's extra bands, feature set and excellent DSP for a couple
of dB any day.
It might look like an Edsel to you, but it looks like a pretty good deal to
me.
