[Kenwood] TS940 Weird Audio Problem

When tuning in a signal (any band, any mode) the audio appears to change
abruptly - rather than smoothly - in 10 Hz increments. All other functions
of the radio operate as normal. To add to this mystery, if I take the cover
off the radio, the problem disappears. Any and all suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.
