[Kenwood] RE: Kenwood digest, Vol 1 #149 - 11 msgs

I apologize if I am doing this wrong. I want to post the request for
information concerning the Kenwood TS 440s filters. I am looking for the
YK-88SN and YK-88C filters. These are for the narrow SSb and CW
respectively. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: [Kenwood] Revive a Kenwood TS-520

I have Kenwood 520 that has been in storage for about 10 years. It
worked great before being put on a shelf in the corner. I decided to
dig it out and see how well it worked and when I plugged it in I didn't
get any receive or transmit out. I get white noise out of the speaker
but nothing else. Can someone give me any pointers as to what I can
check to try and get this rig working again?

Ok I got several responses about the VFO plug. I will check that when I
get home. I should have remembered that but sometimes I get 'dumb'. I
hope that is all that is wrong with it. I just wanted to burn the dust
out of the old rig.

Thanks

There is a jumper on the back accessory (8 pin) socket that enables the
rig to work. (used when no ext VFO is there) If it's missing - that
might be it. I don't have the configuration at hand right now, but if
you'll need it, I can scan and send it to you in a few days. It's no big
deal at all. 73 de Isaac, 4Z4TL

I'm looking for Help- TS-850S

Symptoms: Turn radio on - Display comes on for a brief moment then goes =
blank.

Moving many controls may cause the display to light again but only for a =
brief moment and then the frequ display goes blank again. Audio is never =
heard.

Is this an indication of a failed internal battery?
If so - where and what is it etc?=20
Advice?
( I don't have a manual )

Thanks for your quick answer.
Is there something in particular I must do to get the
PLL to lock?
Or is this a sign that something is defective?

Without warning, my TS-850S/AT has begun to mute the receive audio on all
modes except AM and FM. S-meter action is normal, no dots in the display, in

fact, no other symptoms. I tried a microprocessor reset. Any suggestions?

Thanks & 73, Curt, K4TL

Sounds like possibly the relay in need of service/replacement/cleaning.

Maybe the carrier oscillator is failing. I don't remember where is
the
affected board located. It is one containing four nice square 80 pins or
so IC's, and it is a common fail in that equipment (old S/N at least). I
must see the manual to be sure.
If you raise volume to max, do you hear distorted audio but not as
powerful as in AM?.

Good luck
Guillermo - LU8EYW.

Ok, I think the fault is from one of these chips, that generates the 8xx
MHz carrier frequency. Perhaps, it could be only a cold solder at the
resistor arrays located in the bottom of the board. Sorry, but I have
not the service manual at hand now, maybe tomorrow. I'll look at it to
tell you better.

Good luck
Guillermo - LU8EYW.

Check the squelch. It should be full CCW.

Hello Curt,

Is the S-meter working in the other modes or only in FM AM ? If only FM, AM
than i had a similar problem, the solution is described in my homa page
under "TS850 heaven". For me it was Q15 on the RF unit

Hope this helps ?? Keep me informed.
