[Kenwood] Question on TS-2000

Kevin,

Since I don't know what you know and what you don't know, this may be a bit
more on the tutorial side than you need or want but hopefully it will answer
your questions.  For your wife's benefit, I am generally using caps to
designate the actual control label or display wording.

The liquid crystal display meter is essentially a dual meter with separate
upper and lower scales and separate indicators.  The upper portion of the
meter always shows power output in transmit.  Also on transmit, the lower
portion of the meter is switched among its 3 transmit functions using the
number "5" key on the keypad.  It rotates from SWR to ALC to COMP
(compression) as you push the "5" key.

When in the receive mode the top of the meter always shows signal strength
(S-Meter) and the bottom scale is a graphical representation of the receive
filter bandwidth with a FILTER scale.  The lower scale changes as you change
the LO and HI cut frequency in LSB, USB, FM, & AM and the WIDTH and SHIFT
(center frequency) in CW & FSK.  These are set (depending on mode) with the
two knobs between the main tuning knob and the microphone connector.

What may be a little confusing is that both the power output and S-Meter
scales are shown on the top section and FILTER along with SWR or ALC or COMP
are shown on the bottom scale on both transmit and receive.  What you are
actually reading is dependant on being in transmit or receive but all four
scales are there.

When reading ALC the indication should be in the ALC range which is shown by
a dashed line right next to the letters ALC.  It goes to mid scale on the
lower meter.  When reading Compression (COMP) the scale is 10 dB at roughly
1/3 of the meter deflection and 20 dB at roughly 2/3 deflection.
Compression will only be selectable if the PROC (Processor) is turned on.
The PROC button is in the upper left corner of the rig.  There are two
columns of 4 buttons each here.  PROC is the third button down in the right
column.  Processor level is set by pushing the orange FUNC then PROC key and
using the MULTI/CH knob to set the level.  The MULTI/CH knob is the middle
knob on the far right side of the radio.

I don't exactly understand your question about the TX MONI function.  The TX
MONI is selected using the orange FUNC (function) PWR (power) key
combination.  Once you do that, TX MON OFF (or TX MON 1-9) appears on the
lower right side of the display.  You can then use the MULTI/CH knob to
change the setting from OFF to 1 through 9.  Again, the MULTI/CH knob is the
middle knob on the far right side of the radio.

Putting the TS-2000 in FSK is true FSK transmit, not AFSK.  FSK shift is
selectable on MENU item 38 with choices of 170, 200, 425, or 850 Hz.  MENU
item 39 selects FSK key down polarity of NORMAL or INVERSE.  MENU item 40
selects FSK TONE FREQUENCY of 1275 or 2125 Hz. Use the LSB or USB mode with
the PROC off for AFSK.

Hello All,

I just bought a new TS-2000 and have a couple of questions I need to ask.  I
am totally blind and the manual I have isn't exactly the best.  However, I
have been able to gain a good deal of information from it.  But, I am trying
to explain to my sighted  wife who is not a ham how to read the meter and
the like when I don't really know myself.

Can someone on the list who has one of these please tell me what to describe
to her for proper settings as shown on the ALC meter?  Also, on the
compression level we can't seem to get the meter to read at all according to
her.  I can't quite figure what we are doing incorrectly although I am told
my sig sounds good on the air.

Also, is there a quick shut off to the TX moni function except to turn it
off?

I'm sure I'll have more but for now, I would sure appreciate answers to
