The question arises: Why? Why cant one person buy a radio, sell it in a couple of months to another, and have the second person able to have waranty service done? If the gear is built to factory standards and they are willing to stand behind it for 1 or 2 years, they should be willing to stand behind it no matter who owns it at that time. If I buy a new car, and sell it in 2 years, the warranty period of 3 years is still valid, and that new owner can go into any of that brands shops for warranty service. Are they telling us that the radio is only warranted in order to help sell it, and once sold, they dont worry about it anymore? Sure sounds like that. Now I know you sales people and repair shops have to live by whatever rules the Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc. put forward, but maybe, just maybe you should complain a bit about that yourselves. It cuts down on warranty service you may get for one thing, and for another it might just drive buyers to another brand, or toward someone down the street who does cheaper sales because he has no service facilities and no one expects the extra "mile" from him. The money we are putting into the rigs should include the overhead replacements and repairs that are to be expected for failed equipment during its warranty period, so what difference does it make, as to who turns the gear in for repair?
Without these warranty services, I sure as heck wouldnt buy a 3 months old unit. Nor would the seller then be able to take my money, add a bit to it and buy a newer, more expensive toy for himself, every few months, which is where it appears most new gear is sold.
