Hi Paul,
    the better solution is to use an interface with optocoupler, because you
avoid ground loops and any ground current from PC to radio or vice versa.
Currents from PC to radio or from radio to PC can damage your radio or your
PC...
Optocoupling is useful also to solve or reduce some strange RFI that you can
have.
The interface of TK5EP is circuitally the best but it is complex and needs
an external power supply, mine is simple but equally safe (optocoupled) and
external power supply is not needed.
The N6TR interface is the simplest and it works but the safety...

I use my interface with my TS850S with Easylog (an italian logger, not free)
and I0JX Rigmaster (very nice free software!)
In contest, we use the interface with CT or Writelog (now the best contest
software!)
