[Kenwood] Display contrast for TH-79A HT

Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the display contrast on the
Kenwood TH-79A(D) 2m/440 HT?  I've read through the manual 3 times and I
can't find anything about how to do that.

I just bought this TH-79 this week and after charging up the battery and
turning it on for the first time, I found the display is very dim.  It's
much dimmer than any of my other radios even, and I can't find a way to
make it any darker.  When I do a full reset of the radio (f + power on),
the display shows all the icons, letters and symbols available and they are
nice and dark.  After the reset is complete, the display goes back to being
dim again.  Any ideas before I box it up and ship it back
