[Kenwood] Recommendations for 2nd HF rig

Generally, I agree.  However, the TS-830S was one of the best hybrids
ever made.  The 6146 and 12BY7A tubes are still readily available and
likely will be for some time.  

I know you also referred to the TS-940S, TS-930S, etc.. as antiques and
hard to get parts for.  That's true of the more complex rigs like the
TS-940S.  Most of the parts are readily available with some exceptions
for the somewhat simpler rigs.  I am QRPer, and I am using a 1985
vintage TS-660 a lot right now.  It still has a very good receiver, gets
me good reports, and is a rig I can rely on.

Also, if you don't need general coverage, don't discount the TS-180S
with the WARC option, which many people feel had a better receiver than
the TS-930S that replaced it.  Also, if a simpler, older radio is OK,
the TS-130SE was very good indeed.

So does the TS-690SAT, which is a TS-450S with 6m added.

Exactly.  Even portable possibilities.

If that is the requirement I'd go smaller still, provided you don't mind
smaller controls and menus.  The Yaesu FT-100D is an amazing performer
for it's size and provides VHF/UHF coverage as well.
