[Kenwood] Can a Freq Counter be used on the TS-520SE?

I want to do the opposite, in a sense.  Can I use my DG-5 as a frequency
counter to test the VFO on a kit I'm building?  I have tried setting the
front panel switch to "Counter" and running a wire from the VFO output to
the center of the "Counter" RCA jack on the back of the DG-5.  The DG-5
just sits there and reads out all zeros.  I've also tried keying various
transmitters in the vicinity of the DG-5, including the TS-520S, with a
short length of wire stuck into the center of the Counter RCA jack, hoping
that at least an IF would trigger it.  The display never budges from Zero.

It works just fine in the normal display mode, with three cables run from
the back of the TS-520S.

(I need to check the output of the kit's VFO, which is around
7.9z-8.0MHz.)
