[Kenwood] TS570S(G) Audio woes

I was trying to figure this out.
With regard to the mic gain on the 570, I was trying to figure this out.
The manual give no indication (from my reading of it) of what the level
should be.  For example, on page 15 of the TS-570D(G), "under SSB" it says:
"While speaking into the microphone, adjust the MULTI/CH control so that the
ALC meter reflects according to your voice level."

The is no indication of what that level should be.  I gather, from the
comments made here, the the peaks should hit the upper edge of the scale?
