Yes DIN pin numbers are not sequential, but they are LOGICAL if you
examine the entire series. Note that 3 pin, 5 pin, and maybe 7 pin plugs
will mate with 8 pin jacks. 3 pin plugs fit 3 and 5 pin jacks also.
3 pin fit 7 and 8 pin jacks. And that's within the DIN definition so the
pin numbers on the 8 pin jacks that mate with the pins on a three pin
plug have the same numbers as the 3 pin plug. That way functions can be
(and are) defined by DIN pin number. Ditto for 5 pin in 5 and 8 pin
jacks.

Very logical in a Germanic way. Illogical when the connector pairs are
observed in isolation.
