[Kenwood] 850S problem

    If it is off freq on one sideband it got to be off on the other. When
the 850 or any rig switches sidebands the only thing that happen is the
carrier point moves from one skirt of the SSB filter to the other . Go to
WWV and put the radio on 15.000 or what ever band is open,  then switch from
USB to LSB you should here a difference. Then adjust the trimmer on the
radio's left hand side so they are both the same. Let the radio warm up
about 20 minute's as the reference crystal in the 850 is not the best in the
world. It moves about 25hz from cold to hot !!  Also one very bad thing
about the 850 is the AM receive audio. The audio response is fine ... But
the distortion is not. The 850 uses a simple diode detector (in60) that is
not bias.... I have never seen that is a radio from any make. But anyways
what happens on the 850 is the audio sounds clip on high modulation peaks &
band noise .....Guys please do not tell me YOUR radio is fine as I have had
over 5 radio's from friends over here and they all do it !!!  It's just a
crappy primitive design. I am making a modification right now to fix it
..... other than that I like the rig & happy with mine. It still does not
compare with my much modified 940 . But thats a special radio !!!
