[Kenwood] TM-742A Display / Battery Problems

Has anyone had irratic display problems on a TM-742A mobile? My display is
either not lighting or sometimes all segments are lighting up. I have heard
rumor that the Lithium backup battery will create problems like this.
Kenwood claims in the manual that the battery is good for 5 years and mine
is 10 years old without having been replaced.

Has anyone changed out the battery and what type is it ? I would like to
know before I start tearing into the radio.
