Jason,

You may try to "beef up" the heat dissipatoin rating of the resisor, and 
upset other things.  It could be that the existing surface mount resistor 
is rated at 1/8 watt itself.  A lead mounted resistor might change the 
frequency characteristics of the circuit but not likely too badly.

If you have or can get a new chip resistor use it.  And, find out what 
fried the thing in the first place (if it was fried) and avoid whatever it was.
