[Kenwood] TS-50S

I've been running a TS-50 mobile for several years. I'm at least the 4th
owner. During that time I've had two problems. One is that the tiny
jumper lead between the circuit board and the SO-239 broke loose.
Apparently that's a common problem and Kenwood issued a service bulletin
about it. The other problem caused the unit to unlock at random. Cliff
from Aavid responded to my post for help. The problem was resolved by
resoldering a portion of a circuit board.
A while back, I looked into replacing it with an FT-100 or an IC-706. I
posted some messages on the Icom and Yaesu reflectors and asked for
opinions. All most unanimously, the respondents said if you own a TS-50
keep it, you won't find anything better. I kept it.
Recently I added a Clear Speech mobile speaker. It takes care of the lack
of DSP and a notch filter. Frankly, the Clear Speech works better than the
noise reduction feature in my TS-870! It's an amazing little device.
The TS-50 has worked very well for me, gets great audio reports, and can
hear everything I need to hear. It lives in my car all year long in all
kinds of weather. I certainly can't complain about the reliability. You
should be able to pick one up for a reasonable price on the used market.
Good luck.

I'm looking for another HF rig, and am considering the TS-50S.
Has anyone had experience with this rig?
How does it perform? can you recommend it?
Best features?
Any problems and or fixes??
Thank you, Terry, WAOITP
