I would first attempt to do a carrier point adjustment (VR501 and VR502) as 
described in the service manual page104 , step 31
This requires a two tone generator and an oscilloscope.
If you don't have a copy of the service manual it can be downloaded at 
http://www.dk9ip.de/  this is in four sections and the alignment procedure 
is in the 3rd or 4th section. (There are no schematics or overlays )

If you don't have access to  the two tone generator and the o-scope then 
another  approach is suggested by K6LL for adjusting VR501 and VR502 as 
noted on N6TR's web page at http://n6tr.jzap.com/850repair.html  Scroll 
down near the bottom of the web page.

The good news is that VR501 and VR502 can be accessed without removing the 
case. Open the "door" in the top of the case (On the back .left side). 
VR501 and 502 are located on the front left hand side of the opening. 
Clearly marked little  pots with orange screw driver slots.
