Ray,

Two possibilities come to mind: A high SWR shutdown, or an intermittent power connection.

To ensure that your shutdown is not due to a high SWR, verify that all antenna connections, the cable, and the antenna are
good. Ensure that the antenna really is a good match at the operating frequency- a graphic analyzer is hard to beat for this
task. Does the problem occur when you substitute a known-good 50-ohm dummy load, connected right at the radio?

The most reliable power hookup is with #10 wire, directly to the battery terminals, with a 30-ampere fuse in each lead. Don't
rely on the body or frame for a current return.
